stop_posting
Time's up, keyboards down! Anything posted after this will not be counted towards the assessment - thankyou.
Marks will be on the Dept pinboard towards the end of the week.
Change of Plan
Due to us being incredibly efficient, there will be no class on Thursday - feel free to sleep in :)
The notes about the exam are now up in course documents on blackboard. Any questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks!

Wrapping Up
This week is on the schedule as a wrap-up week. Please comment if there are any topics in particular you'd like me to review. You get out what you put in to the review sessions, so feed me topics for discussion!
Thursday we'll debrief about these blogs and consider the process as a whole, and basically slide smoothly out of the semester :) Feel free to bring your coffee (and a slice of robot cake?)
In regards to the blogs, please don't knock them over/delete them until I give the all-clear here. If you want to keep them going as you study for your exams, feel free. If you want to keep blogging after the paper is over, you are more than welcome!
But as of Tuesday afternoon, I can see the following blogs have made it over the finishing line:
Jake, Alina, Katie, Sophie F., Nicole, Lucy, Kat, Boa, Byron, Josephine, and Lauren.
Congrats. Everyone else, you have less than a day to go, then I will be marking what I can see. *sets up a ticking clock*
EDIT: We never set up a hard deadline, and since you lot are nighhtowls, I'm setting it at noon Wednesday -- I need some time to mark these, after all!

fame, fortune, blogging
One of our blogging number, Jake, has made the mainstream media.
NZ Herald, May 22
UPDATE: I've been having fun watching Jake's post pop up across the blogosphere...
starting with some Twittering
To the blog catalogue and then out onto other blogs
all the way to the mainstream media. Though I haven't seen anything in the ODT (did anyone see any mention in the print edition?)
A good example of why we demand you know your sources before relying on information :)

Extra Office Hours (now with added marking key)
A request has been made, so I will be in my office monday morning (10-11ish) for people who need last minute advice, help, or reassurance over their essays. Please use the time - I'd rather give you help whilst you can still improve than mark you down later.
EDIT: And as per the inclass request, the marking criteria for the blogs:
Assessment
Blogs will be assessed once a week, on the following criteria:
• substance of content (critical; reflective; engaging with material)
• timeliness and appropriateness
• demonstration of comprehension of material
• use of readings and in-class materials
• use of other links and demonstration of wider reading and enagement
• integration of collegial content (i.e.: awareness and engagement with other blogs)
The blog as a whole should demonstrate:
• a growing awareness of the social implications of internet-based networking and communications
• developing critical engagement with the arguments surrounding these issues
• an ability to negotiate the different perspectives surrounding these issues to develop an informed and critical position.
Excellent work will address these criteria, demonstrating a sound grasp of ideas and content and an evolution of critical understanding over the course of the paper, and will show an ability to effectively communicate these ideas to others. Excellent work will be timely and consistent, and display innovation or inquiry into the debates raised over the course of the paper.

Second Life video
Title: You only live twice [videorecording].
Summary: Our world might be getting smaller, thanks to technology, but virtual worlds and games are booming. Millions of people venture daily into these new and constantly evolving landscapes where they can conquer mythical armies, slay dragons and embark on other fantastical quests. In the virtual world of Second Life, you can painlessly remake yourself as a slim and blemish-free avatar, chat up strangers, shop, or start a business and make (or lose) real money. Reporter Ticky Fullerton goes "in world" as an avatar and meets the key players.
Database: University of Otago Libraries
Location: Dn: Central Library: AV Services: DVDs
Call Number: O88616
Number of Items: 1
Status: Available
From the catalogue - feel free to get together as a group (organize yourself in the comments if you like) and book a screening room and watch it as a group.
